When planning transportation, it is important to choose the optimal container sizes and types. This affects not only the cost of transportation, but also the safety of cargo, the convenience and speed of loading and unloading operations, as well as compliance with the requirements of the recipient. Standardization of dimensions is an international rule that makes container transportation universal throughout the world.

Main standard container sizes

ISO standards define several key dimensions that are most commonly used:

1. 20-foot container: external length about 6 m, width ~ 2.4 m, height ~ 2.6 m, internal volume - about 33 m³. This is a compact option, suitable for medium-sized cargo or heavy goods with high density, it is economical in terms of transportation costs and well suited for limited supply volumes.
2. The 40-foot container is the most popular and widespread option for modern international container transportation. Its length of about 12 m makes it suitable for large volumes of cargo, while remaining compatible with all major modes of transport.
3. The 40-foot High Cube is an improved version of the standard 40-foot container with an increased height (approximately 30 cm higher than the standard one). This provides additional internal volume for large but lightweight goods.

In addition to these basic sizes, there are also specialized options, such as 45-foot containers, but they are used less frequently and for narrower logistics tasks.

Main types of containers

The type of container is determined not only by its size, but also by its purpose. Based on the experience of our company, the most commonly used are:

1. Dry (universal) containers: a fully enclosed structure that protects cargo from moisture, dust, and mechanical damage, suitable for most "ordinary" goods that do not require special storage and transportation conditions.
2. Refrigerated containers: equipped with refrigeration equipment and designed for the delivery of cargo that requires maintaining a certain temperature during transportation (for example, food or pharmaceuticals).
3. Open Top Containers: have an open top or awning roof, making it possible to load large or heavy cargo from above, which is convenient when working with non-standard cargo that is difficult to place in the usual way.
4. Platforms: Flat Rack – a container platform without side walls or with hinged sides, suitable for oversized, heavy and large cargo that cannot be placed in a closed container (their convenience lies in the possibility of loading from the side or top); Ro-Ro platforms – designed for transporting cars and other wheeled vehicles.
5. Tankers: tanks for transporting liquids, gases or bulk materials, which guarantee the safe transportation of special and dangerous goods and are used in compliance with strict regulations.

How to choose the optimal container?

The choice depends on several factors:

• cargo volume and weight: the larger the volume or size, the better suited a 40-foot or High Cube container; heavy but compact cargo can be better accommodated in a 20-foot container;
• nature of the cargo: whether special conditions are required (temperature, ventilation, etc.);
• loading/unloading features: is there a need for vertical loading or working with oversized items;
